Susan: Aubrey would say sometimes in a conversation, "but I've got bipolar disorder, you know..." Quite a conversation-stopper at times.
You know, people would say "oh" but then they didn't know what it was.
Everyone would hastily run away and find out what it meant you know... cos it sounded pretty bad (laughs).
When someone says "So ‘n' So's got a mental illness", their immediate reaction to that person changes.
That's the really sad thing... cos, you know, they don't take them for who they are. They suddenly think about what they are.
You know it's the fear I think of not knowing... that makes you... unable to take the step forward to help someone.
Voice Over
For people with mental illness, the biggest barrier to recovery is discrimination.
