Community Education Projects
LIKE MINDS, LIKE MINE
Like Minds, Like Mine is a New Zealand wide programme to counter stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness/distress. It combines community action, a national media campaign and research and evaluation to bring about social change.
The programme is guided by the Like
Minds, Like Mine National Plan 2014-2019, and led by HPA which provides
funding to support programme delivery. The Ministry of Health oversees the strategic
direction and guides the programme with HPA.
The community action component of
Like Minds, Like Mine includes the new Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Education Fund
described below:
Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Education Fund
The Fund supports anti-stigma and discrimination education projects in settings where discrimination mostly occurs.
A Request for Proposal (RFP) was released on www.gets.govt.nz on 1 August
2017 and submissions were due by 11 September 2017. Five projects out of 29 proposals
were selected for funding. The projects are currently for a three year time period and
are due to conclude in late 2020.

This project centres on anti-stigma and discrimination education for selected Social Housing Providers in the North Island (Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and Tauranga) to promote social inclusion for people with mental distress. The project delivery includes face-to-face workshops, plus e-learning support and consultation with social housing providers. Tikanga Māori and Pasifika models of health and wellbeing inform this project and are included in the delivery. There will be at least one Māori and/or Pasifika facilitator at each workshop.

selected Education Providers (secondary, tertiary, alternative) in the North
Island (Auckland, Wellington, Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato) to
promote social inclusion for people with mental distress. The project comprises of an education package including face-to-face workshops, plus e-learning support and consultation. Tikanga Māori and Pasifika models of health and wellbeing inform this project and are included in the delivery. There will be at least one Māori and/or Pasifika facilitator at each workshop. |
| Psychological Medicine Education – a Like Minds, Like Mine anti-stigma and discrimination education project | University of Otago | This project focuses on reducing stigma and discrimination within health
settings. The project uses the World Health Organization Quality Rights Initiative training tools, and the latest evidence-based literature to include a human rights focus. Central to the project is the application and delivery of tikanga Māori models and Pacific models of health and community practice. |
| NZ Police anti-stigma and discrimination education – a Like Minds, Like Mine anti-stigma and discrimination education project | University of Otago with Kites Trust |
This project focuses on delivering anti-stigma and discrimination education
to Police staff and recruits. University of Otago will work with Kites Trust and the New Zealand Police to deliver contact-based education for staff and recruits to improve the police response to people who experience mental distress. Tikanga Māori models and Pasifika models of health and community will be central to the project. |
| ‘No Worries’ workplaces initiative – a Like Minds, Like Mine anti-stigma and discrimination education project | PeerZone Limited | This project is focussed on delivering anti-stigma and discrimination
education in workplace settings to a wide geographical area within New
Zealand. The project will include: a toolkit of resources for employers; a serialised video employment story; peer-led discussion groups in work places; monthly good news videos; workshops on employing and responding to mental distress in the workplace; a responsive employer certificate. Tikanga Māori models of health will be central to the project. Pasifika cultural values and models of health will also be a strong focus of this project. |

This project is an anti-prejudice and discrimination initiative which trains and supports a growing network of leaders with lived experience of mental distress and recovery. It delivers community projects all around the country, using their stories to challenge prejudice and discrimination. The project delivery has been face-to-face workshops, social media engagement and continued mentoring and is now being developed as an online e-learning platform. Tikanga Māori and Pasifika models of health and wellbeing inform this project and are included in the delivery. |
